In May 1917 Gonne enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers, when he had reached the rank of captain, he was sent to the Royal Flying Corps. Michael Edward Gonne was assigned to 54 Squadron, and flew a Sopwith Pup no. A6215 to victory on 25 September and 18 October 1917, destroying 2 Alabatros D.III's. Gonne was given a Sopwith Camel which he increased his tally by another three German aircraft making 5 in total during Janaury 1918. Captain Michael Edward Gonne went missing on 8th August 1918; he was last seen near Brie at 1315 hours. He is buried in Heath Cemetery in Harbonnieres, France.
