Born in 1893, Captain George Arthur Hyde originally served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps but transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, where he underwent pilot training and in February 1917 was posted to 54 Squadron. 54 squadron were flying at the time Sopwith Pups. Hyde scored his first aerial victory on the 17th of March 1917. Captain George Arthur Hyde became flight commander of A Flight in October 1917 and by the 18th of October, he became an ace with five victories along when with Second Lieutenant Michael Gonne, he shot down an Albatros D.V. This was his only destruction of an enemy aircraft - the other four victories were driven down out of control. Prior to becoming a pilot, he had been awarded the Military Cross.
