Oliver Stewart was born in London on the 26th November 1896 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment in October 1914. In 1915 Stewart transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. After a brief stint with 22 Squadron, he was transferred 54 Squadron and flew the Sopwith Pup. Oliver Stewart became a ace with five victries between 6 April and 25 September 1917; and recieved the military cross on the 17th of September 1917. Stewart returned to England, was promoted to major in June 1918, and given command of the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment. Major Oliver Stewart also received an Air Force Cross. He passed away in 1976.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has done consistent good work for six months, both on escorts and offensive patrols, and has displayed great fearlessness and skill during severe fighting at close range with enemy machines, successfully holding his own, although on several occasions outnumbered by them.
