Born on the 8th of March 1899 in Glasgow, Scotland, Walter MacFarlane Carlaw attained the rank of Captain in the Royal Flying Corps, and claimed 12 victories over enemy aircraft in the war, including two in one day on 31st July 1918. Flying Sopwith Camels with No.70 Sqn, all 12 of his victories were claimed between March an October 1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, gazetted on 8th December 1918. In addition to his first world war service, he also joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in World War Two. Walter MacFaralane Carlaw passed away on 24th November 1856. He is buried at Cardross Cemetery, Scotland.

A bold and skilful fighter who has accounted for five enemy machines—two in one engagement, which occurred on 31st July.
