The Handley Page Victor played a significant role in the Falklands conflict of 1982 and in the Gulf War of 1991.The final flight by an RAF Victor was made in November 1993 when XH672 Maid Marian flew from its RAF Marham base destined for the RAF Museum at Cosford. After three decades of front-line Squadron service with the Royal Air Force, two wars, and over 40 years since their conception, thc last of the V-bombers has retired.

 It is ironic that, just as the RAF were beginning to retire or re-assign their ageing force of V-bombers, the situation in the Falkland Islands called for a long-distance bombing mission to disable the runway at Port Stanley which now threatened to become an operational fighter base for the Argentine Air Force.  Flying a round trip of some 8,000 miles, it was necessary for Avro Vulcan XM607 to refuel several times from a fleet of Victor tankers who themselves had to be refueled in an extraordinary relay operation, a remarkable example of planning, navigation and airmanship.  Under the code name 'Black Buck', seven such missions were carried out, using bombs and missiles fired from hastily fitted pylons beneath the Vulcan's wings.  Here, a Vulcan edges slowly toward the drogue to receive fuel from a Victor K.Mk2.

 Originally conceived by Sir Frederick Handley Page as a jet bomber as long ago as 1945, the project that would evolve into the HP.80 was to become one of the RAF's most enduring types. Named the <i>Victor</i>, the prototype first took to the air in December 1952, entering service with the RAF in 1957.  Incredibly, the last <i>Victor</i> was retired in 1993, the type having metamorphosed from bomber to tanker in the course of its long career, perhaps its most notable achievement being support for the longest-range bombing mission in history when a <i>Vulcan</i> bombed the runway at Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, in 1982, flying from Ascension Island.

Originally designed by W F Petter (the designer of the Canberra) The first Lighting Prototype was first flown on the 4th August 1954 by Wing Commander R P Beamont at Boscombe Down. The second prototype P1A, The name of Lightning was not used until 1958) (WG763) was shown at the Farnborough show in September 1955. The Third prototype was flown in April 1957 and was the first British aircraft ever to fly at Mach 2 on the 25th November 1958 The first production aircraft made its first flight on 3rd November 1959 and entered operational service with the RAF on the 29th June 1960with |NO. 74 squadron based at Coltishall. The F1 was followed shortly after by the F1A which had been modified to carry a in-flight refueling probe. The Lightning F2 entered service in December 1962 with no 19 and 92 squadrons. a total of 44 aircraft F2 were built. The F3 came into service between 1964 and 1966 with Fighter Command squadrons, re engined with the Roll's Royce Avon 301 turbojets. The Lightning T Mk 5 was a training version Lightning a total of 22 were built between August 1964 and December 1966. The BAC Lighting F MK 6 was the last variant of the lightning, base don the F3, this was the last single seat fighter and served the |Royal Air Force for 20 years. First Flown on 17th April 1964, and a total of 55 F6 saw service with the Royal Air Force, and the last Lightning F6 was produced in August 1967. A Total of 278 lightning's of all marks were delivered. In 1974 the Phantom aircraft began replacing the aging Lightning's, but 2 F6 remained in service up to 1988 with Strike Command until finally being replaced with Tornado's. VictorThe Handley Page Victor was a British jet bomber aircraft produced by the Handley Page Aircraft Company. It was the third and final of the "V bombers" which provided Britain's nuclear deterrent. The other two V-bombers were the Avro Vulcan and the Vickers Valiant. The Victor was the last of the V-bombers to enter service and the last to retire, nine years after the last Vulcan (The Handley Page Victor saw service in the Falklands War and 1991 Gulf War as an in-flight refuelling tanker. The only Offensive mission that the Victors was during the Bornio Conflict in 1962 to 1966 where two B.1A Victors flew missions.
