Edward H Tunison | Staff Sergeant Edward H Tunison Entering training in August 1943 he served as a Radio Operator on a C-47 called Placid Lassie (now restored) with the same crew throughout his time in Europe. Based at RAF Fulbeck, his crew moved to RAF Aldermaston in early June 1944 to drop paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division into Cherbourg in the early hours of D-Day. He made two more trips that day, flying fuel into Normandy, operating into pre-fabricated steel forward runways, and in re-supply missions for Patton's Third US Army. In September of 1944, during Operation Market Garden, he was engaged in towing Horsa gliders carrying British troops into Eindhoven, Holland. He later flew re-supply operations into the Battle of the Bulge, towed gliders during the Rhine crossings and undertook the evacuation of wounded from all sides. He served with the 74th TCS, 434th TCC, 9th Air Force. |
