The Nieupport fighters were used by many allied countries during World war One. and was the fighter flown by Billy Bishop when winning his VC and also the French Ace Charles Nungesser. The Nieuport 27 was first flown by the RFC No 1 squadron in October 1917. and the Nieuport XXVIII  were also flown by American Pilots including Luke Rickenbacker and Lufbery. The Imperial Russian Flying Corps was also equipped with French Nieuport 17 aircraft

Originally formed as Nieuport-Duplex in 1902. The company produced engine components I 1909  It be became  Société Générale d'Aéro-locomotion During this time, their first aircraft were built, starting with a small single-seat monoplane, with a  second  by the end of 1909.

In 1911, the company was re organized to only produce aircraft and became Nieuport at Deplante.  And run by Edouard Nieuport who was unfortunately killed in a  aviation accident.  The company was taken over  by Henri Deutsch de la Meurthe and the company became Societe Anonyme des Etablissements Nieuport. After a few years of major problems the company took on Gustave Delage as chief designer and  he began on a bi plane with a lower wing being narrower than the top wing, initially for racing in the Gordon Bennett Trophy race,  but with the outbreak of world war one  the aircraft was developed for the military and the Nieuport 10 entered service as a two seat reconnaissance aircraft in 1915

Two further developments form this aircraft were produced the smaller Nieuport 11  a single seat aircraft and   the Nieuport 12 a more powerful two seater.The Nieuport 10 saw service with the Royal Naval Air Service and the French and Russian Flying Services. With the Nieuport 12 being flown by the Royal Flying Corps
