Above the Cauldron by David Pentland. Borisov, Russia, 2nd July 1941. The battle for Minsk lasted 12 days, when it ended 300,000 soviet troops had been taken prisoner. In the air fierce battles were fought to smash an escape route to the citys defenders. It was during this chaos that Gerd Barkhorn scored his first victory against a Soviet DB-3 bomber. He had flown 120 missions throughout the Battle of Britain, and only succeeded in being shot down himself. It was only in Russia that his career really took off. By the end of the war he was credited with 301 victories in 1104 missions. |
