![]() ![]() Air Vice Marshal Sir Bernard Chacksfield KBE CB (deceased) *Signature Value : £40 | Forty years service in the Royal Air Force both as an engineer and pilot. Fighter pilot during World War Two rising to the rank of Air Vice Marshal afterwards. Was knighted by the Queen for Service beyond the call of duty and also appointed a Commander of the Order of the Bath. He was also decorated by General Chaing Kai-Shek for service to the Air Forces of China during World War Two. He served many yars in the Far East, including India and the North West Frontier, Singapore, Burma and Malaya. He flew in India and Burma during World War Two in support of the largest Army under General Sir Bill Slim and Lord Louis Mountbatten, commanding a Wng of P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft moving down from the frontier of India to Rangoon and assisting in the recapture of Mandalay, Rangoon and all Burma. He was on Mountbatten's Staff for the re-invasion of Malaya and was in Singapore for the final surrender. After the war he was a senior member of NATO in Europe under General Eisenhower. He retired in 1966. He died on 27th December 1999. |
