Unteroffizier Ottomar Kruse | Unteroffizier Ottomar Kruse Pilot, 8./JG26. Having started flying prior to the war, he was appointed as an flight instructor, but risked a court martial in turning down this appointment, in favour of becoming a fighter pilot. On 18th August 1944 Kruse landed at a race-track with combat damage, and was told by a Labour Service officer he was in Arras. During one mission, he scored two confirmed victories, earning him the Iron Cross. He had claimed a P51 of 354 Fighter Group at Rambouillet and on the 25th of August a P38 of the 474 Fighter Group near Beauvais (pilot James Austin). On the 16th of September 1944 he was flying Fw190A-8 171505 and was shot down at Nutherveld at 1810hrs by a P47 of 50FG, and became a POW. He died on 9th October 2009. |
