Incident over Mannheim by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On the night of 12th September 1944, Lancaster NF958 (LS-M) of No.15 Sqn was lost in the skies above Mannheim when it was attacked by the Messerschmitt Bf.110G-2 of Ofw Ludwig Schmidt of II/NGJ 6, the bomber receiving hits to the bomb bay which ignited the incendiaries still in their racks. Five of the crew bailed out and were taken prisoner of war once captured. The pilot, F/O Norman Overend RNZAF, did not escape the aircraft. Flt Sgt Harry A Beverton was seen to leave the stricken Lancaster but was not seen again.

Crew of Lancaster LS-M :

F/O Norman Overend RNZAF
Sgt Barry J Howarth (survived)
Sgt George B Thomson (survived)
Flt Sgt John D Jones (survived)
Flt Sgt Robert P E Kendall (survived)
Flt Sgt Harry A Beverton
Sgt I Spagatner (survived).

First Strike by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Avro Lancaster B MkIII ED932(G), AJ-G, of Wing Commander Guy Gibson was the first aircraft to make an attempt at breaching the Möhne Dam on the night of 16/17th of May 1943 as Operation Chastise got underway. Having already made one 'sighting' run over the target, Gibson turned and began his second run, the flak and 20mm fire from the shore and from the towers of the dam now throwing up a hail of fire. Undeterred, the Upkeep mine was released, skipping across the water as planned, but striking the dam wall off centre with no visible effect. Gibson made several passes over the Möhne, each time escorting the attacking aircraft in an attempt to draw the enemy fire. With the Möhne finally breached, he led the remaining aircraft on to the Eder dam with similar success before returning safely to Manston.

North Atlantic Companions by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Short Sunderland Mk.1 L5798 (DA-A) of 210 Sqn, based at Pembroke, dips her wings in salute to HMS Hood as she punches through the North Atlantic swell early in 1941. By May of that year, this mighty ship would be gone, lost with all but three of her crew, a victim of the might of the German Navy at the savage hands of the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen.

Christmas Greetings from the RFC, North Italy, 25th December 1917 by David Pentland. (PC)

On Christmas Day at 0745 hours, Maj.Barker and Lt Steve Hudson of No.28 Squadron, staged an unauthorized raid on the German aerodrome at San Fior, even dropping a holiday greeting - To the Austrian Flying Corps, with Christmas greetings from the RFC, along with liberal machine gun fire and twenty-pound Cooper bombs.

Close Combat by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Whilst flying with A Flight of 85 Squadron on 30th July 1940, Geoffrey Allard encountered a pair of Messerschmitt Bf.110s about 40 miles from the coast, apparently patrolling near a convoy. After Squadron Leader Townsend, flying Red 1, had made two unsuccessful attacks, Allard closed to 150 yards and began to fire continuously, eventually closing to just 25 yards, whereupon the starboard engine of the Bf.110 began to disintegrate. This was just one of eight victories that Allard claimed during the Battle of Britain to add to a previous eight that he had scored flying Hurricanes during the Battle of France.

Mayhem at St Trond by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Whilst on a strafing sortie over German occupied St Trond airfield on 25th February 1944, Spitfires of 331 Sqn launched an attack on the Heinkel He.177 bombers that were stationed there. Among those taking part was Norwegian ace Lieutenant Frederick Arild Sverdrup Fearnley, flying Spitfire Mk IX MJ354 (FN-W). Fearnley shared in the destruction of a Heinkel He.177 as it tried to take off, but his Spitfire was immediately hit by ground fire, the young Norwegian losing his life in the ensuing crash. Fearnley was credited with a possible 7 victories in his short career.

Tribute to Ferdinand West VC by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Known as Freddie, West was the first pilot of the newly formed Royal Air Force to be awarded the Victoria Cross. He is shown here during a bombing mission to Merricourt on 19th June 1918. Jumped by enemy fighters, he was forced to evade his assailants by weaving through German barrage balloons. Successfully shaking off the Fokkers in Armstrong-Whitworth FK.8 C8594, he continued to his intended target. Less than two months later, and in a similar aircraft, he undertook the mission which earned him his VC, but cost him an amputated leg. He remained in the RAF until the end of World War Two and lived until 1988, aged 92.

Tribute to the Crews of the Stirling by Graeme Lothian. (PC)

Outward bound, Stirling III of 199 Squadron based at Lakenheath, Suffolk, heads out on another night of operations in August 1943. EE953, Sqd letters EX - E of 100 group is piloted by F/L Tom Austin DFC who finished his tour by the end of October 1944, winning the DFC with his bomb aimer F/O Jack Lawrence. Nicknamed the Queen of the Skies, the Stirling was the 1st four engined bomber to enter service with the RAF in 1941. The cockpit stood a massive 22.5 feet from the ground and had an operational ceiling of only 12,000 feet, well within the range of the enemy AA guns. By September 1944 other bombers were taking the brunt of the attack to the Germans and the Stirlings were used mainly for glider towing especially for D-day and Arnhem.

Phantom II by David Pentland. (PC)

Typhoon Season by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Typhoon IBs of No.181 Squadron attack a German supply vessel off the coast of northern France during the run up to D-Day in 1944 using cannon and 60lb rockets. This unique aircraft's amazing speed at low level and awesome fire-power proved formidable and, after a shaky start to its service career, proved itself beyond all doubt to be an essential tool in the softening-up operations against German defences prior to allied invasion in June 1944.

Ltn. Hans-Ekkehard Bob of JG21 Becomes an Ace by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Major Hans-Ekkehard Bob is shown claiming his 5th victory - a Blenheim - 60km west of Rotterdam on 26th June 1940. Bob went on to serve with JG.54, JG.51, JG.3, EJG2.2 and JV.44, scoring a total of 60 confirmed victories in the course of his Luftwaffe service. The Blenheim claimed as his 5th victory is likely to have been R3776 of No.110 Squadron, which was the only Blenheim recorded to have been lost participating in Operation Soest on that day - while another returned to base damaged and crash landed. The three crew of the Blenheim were all missing in action - P/O Cyril Ray Worboys, Sgt Gerald Patterson Gainsford and Sgt Kenneth Cooper.

Nacht Jäger - HE219s over the Harts by Randall Wilson. (PC)

Leap of Faith by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Dodging heavy flak and anti aircraft fire in the skies above Normandy, Douglas C-47s of the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron, 439th Troop Carrier Group see the 101st Airborne Division away on the night of 5th/6th June 1944 at the start of Operation Overlord. D-Day had arrived.

Dornier Stablemates by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Two of Dornier's most notable products of the late war period sit together in the evening sun outside one of hangars at Oberpfaffenhoffen. Looking menacing in its night camouflage is a Do.217K1 wearing the markings of KG.2, as yet uncoded, whilst a Do.335 'Pfeil' VG+PH receives some attention in the background.

Tribute to Walter Krupinski by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Originally flying Me109s with JG52 at the end of the Battle of Britain, Walter Krupinski then transferred to the Eastern Front and had scored more than 50 victories by the end of 1942, earning him the Knight's Cross. He took on a young and struggling Erich Hartmann and tutored him in aerial combat - Hartmann went on to become the leading Ace in history with 352 victories. Commanding 7.JG52 in 1943, Krupinski scored 11 victories in a single day. In the spring of 1944 he went west for the defence of Germany, commanding units in JG5, JG26 and JG11. He was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross and in March 1945 joined the famous JV44 flying Me262 jets until the end of the war. In more than 1100 missions he was credited with 197 victories. He is seen here flying Bf.109 G-2 Yellow 5 of 6/JG52 over Russia in October 1942. He later flew with the reformed German Air Force after the war, and flew the F-104 Starfighter. He died in 2000.

Leutnant der Reserve Erwin Bohme by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Albatros C.III C.766/16 was among the most distinctively-painted aircraft of World War 1, its fuselage sides decorated with a dragon motif on the starboard side and a stylised crocodile on the other, both apparently chasing a tiny white biplane. This was the aircraft shared by Erwin Bohme and his observer, Leutnant Ladermacher while serving with Jasta 10 on the Eastern Front in August 1916. Bohme was soon chosen to fly with the great Oswald Boelke with Jasta 2, the latter being tragically killed in a collision with Bohme on 28th October during an aerial combat with DH.2s of 24 Sqn. This tragedy haunted Bohme for many months to come, but he went on to score 24 confirmed victories before falling victim to an FK.8 on 29th September 1917. Their Albatros C.III is shown picking off a Russian Nieuport 12, his first kill on 2nd August 1916.

Tribute to Capitano Adriano Visconti by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Macchi C.205V Veltro of Capitano Adriano Visconti, the Commanding Officer of 1a Squadriglia, 1° Gruppo Caccia, ANR, is shown taking off for another mission in the Spring of 1944, the Italian ace amassing ten victories in the course of his career.
