| Akroyd, HAROLD JOHN Akroyd was serving as a Sergeant Pilot with 152 Sqn at Acklington at the start of The Battle Of Britain. The squadron to Warmwell in Dorset. On August 15th 1940 Akroyd claimed a Ju 87 destroyed. On the same day he returned to Warmwell in the late afternoon after combat over Portland, damaged and with a jammed rudder, In Spitfire R6910. In combat with enemy fighters over Lyme Regis in the afternoon of October the 7th Akroyd was shoot down. His aircraft, Spitfire MK1 N3039, crashed and burned out at Shatcombe Farm, Wynford Eagle which is situated approximately 10 mile to the west of Dorchester. He was severely burned and died the next day October 8th 1940 . He is buried in the Holy Trinity, Church at Warmwell. | |

| Barker, JOHN KEITH Sergeant J.K.Barker of No 152 Squadron served as a ground wireless operator in the pre-war RAF before being trained as a Pilot. He was with 152 Sqn at the start of The Battle Of Britain. On the 18th August 1940 he claimed a Ju 87 destroyed and on the 25th of August a Bf 109. He was killed on 4th of September 1940. His Spitfire I was shot down off Bognor Regis. He baled out but was not rescued and his body washed up on the French Coast. Sergeant Barker's body was buried at Etaples, France, he was 22 years old. | |

| Bayles, Ian Norman on 19th October 1938 Bayles joined the University Air Squadron and then transferred to the RAFVR in June 1939. He was commissioned in the RAFVR on 26th September 1939, On 20th April 1940 joined 152 Squadron at Acklington The squadron had recently received its first Spitfires. Bayles was sent to 5 OTU Aston Down on 5th May to convert to Spitfires. On 29th May he was posted to 249 Squadron at Leconfield but, following pressure from 152's CO, he rejoined 152 Squadron on 9th June 1940. Bayles damaged a Me110 on 13th August, claimed a Ju88 destroyed and a He111 damaged on 25th September, damaged a Me110 on the 27th and a He111 on the 30th. He was posted away from 152 on 18th August 1941 to instruct. In mid-1942 Bayles took a short gunnery course and was posted to 224 Group in India. He returned to operations on 5th February 1943, when he was given command of 135 Squadron at George, operating along the Arakan coast in Hurricanes. Bayles led 135 until November 1943. He commanded 273 Squadron at Maunghnama and later Kyaukpyu from 16th December 1944 until 14th April 1945, when he was appointed Wing Commander Flying of 902 Wing | |

| Baynham, GEOFFERY THEODORE he joined the RAF on a short service commission, beginning his initial training on 6th October 1938. Once qualified, his first posting on 12th September 1939 was to 80 Squadron, operating Gladiators at Amriya, Egypt. Baynham was posted to 12 OTU Benson to convert to the Fairey Battle light bomber and went on to 4 (C) Ferry Pilot Pool at Kemble on 15th June 1940. As the Battle squadrons had by then been effectively destroyed by the fighting in France he went to 7 OTU Hawarden on 3rd September to convert to Spitfires. He then joined 234 Squadron at St. Eval on the 16th. Baynham joined 234 Sqn at Middle Wallop in mid September 1940.On the 5th October 1940 He was posted to 152 Sqn at Warmwell. In March 1941 he returned to 234, . Bf 109 on the 19th May 1941 and on 17th July he shot down Three more. He was posted back to 152 Sqn on the 17th April 1943, as a Flight Commander. The Squadron was then at Souk-El-Khemis in North Africa. Bayham was awarded the D.F.C (10.9.43). He Left the RAF in 1945. | |

| Beaumont, WALTER. was a pre-war member of the RAFVR and was then living at Coulsdon, Surrey. Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his training and joined 152 sqd as a Pilot Officer. On 12th August Beaumont shared a Me109 and damaged two Ju88’s, on the 16th he claimed two Me109’s destroyed, on the 18th two Ju87’s and a shared Me109, on the 22nd a Ju88, on the 25th another Me109 and on the 27th he shared in the destruction of a He111. On this day Beaumont was hit by return fire from a Ju88 and baled out safely. His Spitfire, R6831, crashed into the sea eight miles of Portland. Beaumont was unhurt. W.Beaumont was lost over the Channel on the 23rd of September 1940 in a Spitfire I (R7016), cause remains unknown. | |

| Bird-Wilson, H Birdy-Wilson joined the R.A.F. in 1937 and fought with 17 squadron during the Battle of France. Active throughout the Battle of Britain, awarded the DFC in the September of 1940, the same date he was shot down by Major Adolph Galland of JG26, bailing out with severe burns. He took command of 152 squadron in April 1942 and promoted Wing Commander 1943 he led 121 wing then 122 wing. Rested in January 1944 he went to the US command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. Throughout the rest of 1944 he flew Mustangs, being awarded the D.S.O. in January 1945. He added the Czech Medal of Merit, 1st Class and the Dutch DFC. He stayed in the R.A.F. after the war until his retirement in 1974. By 1987 he had flown no less than 213 different types, including an Airship, the James Bond Autogiro and during 1978 the F-15 Eagle Fighter. He died on 27th December 2000. Citation for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Flying Officer Bird-Wilson has shot down six enemy aircraft and shared in the destruction of several others. He has shown fine fighting qualities and determination in his attacks.” (London Gazette – 24 September 1940) Citation for the award of the Distinguished Service Order Since being awarded a Bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross, this officer has participated in a very large number of sorties. He has continued to display the highest qualities of leadership, skill and gallantry, qualities which have been well illustrated in the fine fighting spirit of the squadrons he commands. Within the past four months. Wing Commander Bird-Wilson has led large formations of aircraft on a variety of sorties during which much success has been obtained. Many enemy aircraft have been destroyed, whilst a good number of locomotives, wagons, mechanical transport and armoured fighting vehicles have been most effectively attacked. Throughout these operations. Wing Commander Bird-Wilson has set an example which has inspired all.” (London Gazette – 9 January 1945) | |

| Boitel-Gill, DEREK PIERRE AUMALE He joined the RAF in 1929, went to 5 FTS, Sealand and joined 3 Squadron at Upavon on 9th September 1930. He went on to the RAFO in 1934. Sometime personal pilot to the Nizam of Hyderabad, Boitel-Gill went on to serve as a pilot with Imperial Airways. He was recalled to the RAF in April 1940 and joined 152 Squadron at Acklington as a Flight Commander. On 5th May Boitel-Gill was posted to 5 OTU Aston Down. After he had converted to Spitfires he was retained to assist in instructing new pilots on Defiant's and did not re-join 152 Squadron until 27th July 1940. Flight Lieutenant Derek B.P.A.Boitel-Gill of No 152 Squadron landed his Spitfire I (K9954) on the 15th of August 1940 at Cherbourg following with a Bf 109 combat over Portland. The Spitfire I was a write off but pilot Boitel-Gill was uninjured. He destroyed a Ju88 on 12th August, two Me110's and a Ju87 on the 15th, another Ju87 on the 18th, a Ju88 and a Me109 on 25th September, a Ju88 on the 26th and damaged a Ju88 on 19th October. Awarded the DFC (gazetted 22nd October 1940), he commanded 152 from November 1940 to 17th June 1941, when he was posted to 59 OTU Crosby-on Eden as Wing Commander Flying .On the 18th September 1941 Wing Commander Derek Boitel-Gill was killed in a flying accident at Carlisle, He was cremated at West Norwood Crematorium, Lambeth, London. | |

| Christie, JOHN McBEAN. John McBean Christie joined the RAFVR in July 1938 as an Airman u/t Pilot. He was called up on 1st September 1939 and did his elementary flying training at 12 EFTS Wick. He moved on to 5 FTS Sealand on No. 48 Course, which ran from 27th May to 10th August 1940.Christie arrived at 7 OTU Hawarden on the 10th and after converting to Spitfires in August 1940 Christie joined 152 Sqn at Warmwell . On the 26th September Christie was shoot down by a Bf 109 in combat over the channel off Swanage, Dorset. His Spitfire K9882, crashed into the sea and he was picked up dead. He is buried in Arkleston Cemetery, Renfrew. He was 22 years old. . | |

| Cox, Graham James He joined the RAF on a short service commission in January 1939. He was with 152 Sqn at Acklington in June 1940. On 12th August 1940 he shared a Ju88, on the 13th got a probable Me110, on the 18th shared a Me109 and on the 21st shared a Ju88. Cox claimed a Me110 destroyed on 27th September, one damaged on the 30th and Ju88's damaged on 7th and 19th October. He destroyed a He111 on 27th May 1941 and with his tour completed he was posted away and awarded the DFC (gazetted 17th October 1941). He was awarded the D.F.C (17.10.41) .He returned to operations in September 1942 and went to 501 Squadron at Middle Wallop, as a Flight Commander. In may 1943 he was posted to 42 Squadron at Mateur, Tunisia. The Squadron moved to Malta on June the 8th. On bomber escort to Gerbini, Sicily. After attacking a trian at Vizzini Station with his Number 2 which destroyed the engine. He was promoted and took command of 229 Squadron at Krendi on the 5th July 1943. On the 10th of July he destroyed three Mc 200’s. He was posted away in October 1943 for a rest. He returned to operations in February 1944 and took control of 92 Squadron at Marcianise in Italy. Cox was awarded the DSO (10.10.44). He was released from the RAF in 1946 as a Squadron Leader. On 14th February 1968 Cox was piloting Cessna 182H CF-WUK over Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta, Canada when it became uncontrollable due to ice forming on the wings. The aircraft came down in the lake and Cox and his two passengers were killed. | |

| Deansley, EDWARD CHRISTOPHER He joined 605 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force in early 1937 and was commissioned on 18th March. Called up on 24th August 1939, Deanesly was posted to 152 Squadron and was shot down His Spitfire had been damaged by return fire from a Ju87, which punctured his glycol tank. He ditched in the Channel south of Portland, was picked up by the SS Empire Henchman, landed at Lyme Regis and admitted to hospital, wounded.. On the 26th of September 1940 he was shot down and wounded again off Swanage, he baled out of his stricken Spitfire I (K9982) after combat. crashed into the Channel. After a spell in hospital, Deanesly became a Fighter Controller. On 23rd November 1940 256 Squadron was reformed at Catterick with Defiants as a night-fighter unit and Deanesly joined it as a Flight Commander. Over the Birmingham area during the night of 10th/11th April 1941 Deanesly, with Sgt. WJ Scott s his gunner, destroyed a He111, on 3rd/4th May they shot down a Ju88 over Merseyside and also a Do17 which crashed in North Wales. On 7th/8th May they destroyed a He111 bomber over manchester. Deanesly took command of 256 Squadron in September 1941 and led it until April 1942. He commanded RAF Castle Camps until October, being then posted to West Africa where he was involved with maintaining the aircraft ferry route from Takoradi to Egypt. After commanding 298 Wing in the Middle East from January to August 1943, Deanesly took over 114 Wing until March 1944 when he was posted back to the UK. He became CFI at 107 OTU, Leicester East, training pilots on Dakotas for paratroop and glider-towing operations. Deanesly took command of 575 Squadron, equipped with Dakotas, in December 1944. He took part in the Rhine crossings in March 1945, towing a glider. | |

| Devitt, Peter Kenneth He was commissioned in the RAFO in March 1932 and trained in Bristol Fighters at Filton, Bristol. He relinquished this commission when he was granted a commission in 600 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force at Hendon in July 1933. Called to full-time service on 24th August 1939, Devitt was posted to the Operations Room at Tangmere. In February 1940 he was given command of 152 Squadron.at Acklington. On the 25th of September he was hit in the petrol tank by return fire from a He 111 engaged west of Bristol and forced landed at Skew bridge, Newton St Loe, near bath. Devitt was posted to HQ 9 Group at the end of October 1940. In April 1941 he went to HQ 14 Group as Senior Controller. In December 1941 he was posted to HQ 221 Group at Rangoon, leading the final withdrawal of troops out of Burma to Assam on May the 8th 1942. He was Wing Commander training at HQ 224 Group, Calcutta until June 43, when he became Station Commander RAF Ranchi. In January 44 he was given command of 189 Wing at Silchar and in September he was promoted to Group Capatain as Ops, SEAC, Barrackmore, Calcutta.Invalided home in November 1944, Devitt went to Air Ministry London until released in 1945. He commanded 615 Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force from 1949 to 1950 | |

| Sizer, Wilf Born on 23rd February 1920, at the outbreak of war Bill Sizer was flying Hurricanes with 213 Squadron, after flying Guantlets with No.17 Squadron. The squadron flew to France in May 1940, where he scored his first victories, before being attacked by five Me109s and shot down. Rejoining his squadron soon after, he took part in the air battles over Dunkirk before again being shot down and escaping back to England. He flew throughout the Battle of Britain. Based at Exeter, on the 11th of August, he shot down a Ju88, and the next day he shot down a fighter escorting a large formation of bombers. As the attacks intensified, the pilots of 213 Sqn fle wup to four patrols a day. On the 15th of August he shot down two Ju87 Stukas. He also shared in the destruction of a Ju88 in October 1940, bringing it down over Beachy Head. He was awarded the DFC for scoring 7 and 5 shared victories. In April 1941 he was posted to join 1 Squadron, and then 91 Squadron. In April 1942 he joined 152 Squadron flying Spitfires, with whom he went to North Africa. In January 1943 he was given command of 93 Squadron and took part in the Sicily landings. While leading 93 Squadron he shot down two Italian fighters and damaged several others. He was awarded a Bar to the DFC. He finished the war with 7 and 5 shared victories. He died 22nd December 2006. | |

Gladiator 
Manufacturer : Gloster Production Began : 1935 Retired : 1945 Number Built : 746 | Gladiator GLOSTER GLADIATOR: A continuation form the Gloster Gauntlet aircraft the Gloster Gladiator (SS37) becoming designated the F.7/30 was named Gladiator on the 1st July 1935. The first 70 Gladiators had Under wing machine guns (Vickers or Lewis) before the browning became standard The first aircraft arrived at Tangmere airfield on in February 1937 to no. 72 squadron. at the outbreak of world war two a total of 218 Gladiators had been received by the Royal air force with a total of 76 on active service. They served also in the Middle eats and in 1940 when Italy joined the war was nearly the only front line fighter in the middle east. Between 1939 and 1941. the Gloster Gladiator flew in many war zones. flying in France, Greece, Norway, Crete Egypt Malta and Aden. The Aircraft claimed nearly 250 air victories. It stayed in front line duties until 1942, then becoming fighter trainer, and other sundry roles. It continued in these roles until the end of world war two. The Naval equivalent the Sea Gladiator a short service in the Middle east and European waters. A Total of 746 aircraft were built of these 98 were Sea Gladiators.. Performance. speed: 250mph at 17,500 feet, 257 mph at 14,600 Range 430 miles. Armament: Two fixed .3-03 browning machine guns | |
Spitfire 
Manufacturer : Supermarine Production Began : 1936 Retired : 1948 Number Built : 20351 | Spitfire Royal Air Force fighter aircraft, maximum speed for mark I Supermarine Spitfire, 362mph up to The Seafire 47 with a top speed of 452mph. maximum ceiling for Mk I 34,000feet up to 44,500 for the mark XIV. Maximum range for MK I 575 miles . up to 1475 miles for the Seafire 47. Armament for the various Marks of Spitfire. for MK I, and II . eight fixed .303 browning Machine guns, for MKs V-IX and XVI two 20mm Hispano cannons and four .303 browning machine guns. and on later Marks, six to eight Rockets under the wings or a maximum bomb load of 1,000 lbs. Designed by R J Mitchell, The proto type Spitfire first flew on the 5th March 1936. and entered service with the Royal Air Force in August 1938, with 19 squadron based and RAF Duxford. by the outbreak of World war two, there were twelve squadrons with a total of 187 spitfires, with another 83 in store. Between 1939 and 1945, a large variety of modifications and developments produced a variety of MK,s from I to XVI. The mark II came into service in late 1940, and in March 1941, the Mk,V came into service. To counter the Improvements in fighters of the Luftwaffe especially the FW190, the MK,XII was introduced with its Griffin engine. The Fleet Air Arm used the Mk,I and II and were named Seafires. By the end of production in 1948 a total of 20,351 spitfires had been made and 2408 Seafires. The most produced variant was the Spitfire Mark V, with a total of 6479 spitfires produced. The Royal Air Force kept Spitfires in front line use until April 1954. | |
