Tribute to Hubert 'Hub' Zemke by Ivan Berryman. (P) Hub Zemke lends his name to 'Zemke's Wolf Pack', the 56th Fighter Group that became deadly with the P-47 Thunderbolt thanks to his tactics with the machine. He scored a total of 17.75 victories in the war, mostly with this unit, but is depicted here on 26th September 1944 flying a P-51 Mustang with the 479th Fighter Group. He scored just 2.5 victories with this unit, but the one depicted here is over the German Ace Alfred Grislawski in his Me109 - a victory that injured Grislawski and meant he took no further combat role in the war. At the end of October, Hub Zemke's airframe failed in turbulence and he bailed out to be taken prisoner for the rest of the war. Amongst his many decorations are the Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross as well as the Purple Heart. He died aged 80 in 1994. |

Tribute to George Kemp 'Sheep' Gilroy by Ivan Berryman. (P) George Gilroy was a highly decorated World War Two pilot who acquired the nickname Sheep from his pre-war work as a shepherd. Flying with No.603 Sqn, he shared in 8 aircraft destroyed and claimed 3 victories of his own with the squadron. With No.609 Sqn he claimed another 4 victories before moving to command 324 Wing. Here, his score continued to climb and he was finally credited with 14 victories and another 14 shared with another dozen or so claimed damaged or probably destroyed. He is seen here in his No.603 Sqn Spitfire XT-N X4271 in which he claimed Me109s on the 28th and 31st August 1940. This Spitfire crashed in Wanstead after he baled out on 31st August - he was hospitalised by a crowd who mistook him for a German pilot in this incident. |
Tribute to Walter Briegleb by Ivan Berryman. (P) Walter Briegleb is shown in his Ju88 G.7 4R+BR as he stalks his prey - on this occasion a Lancaster. Flying below their target, his crew would aim upward firing cannon at the inner wing of the bomber, igniting the fuel tanks. For the bomber crews, they were very much defenceless against this type of attack, and often had no idea of the presence of an enemy aircraft in the dark. |
Tribute to the VC10 by Ivan Berryman. (P) Celebrating its 50th year of faithful service in 2012, the Vickers VC10 has proved to be one of the most enduring types in British aviation. The final role for these elegant veterans has been to provide mid-air refueling for the RAF, as typified here by C.1K XV106 'W' of 101 Sqn, Brize Norton. Retirement is planned for March 2013 for the final few serving aircraft, closing a significant chapter in the history of jet age. |
Tribute to Hugo Broch by Ivan Berryman. (P) Regarded as one of the finest wingmen to have flown, Hugo Broch first flew alongside Horst Adameit (who scored 166 victories) then Bazi Sterr (130 victories) before emerging as one of the superb combat pilots of JG54. Shown here in his Fw190, he scored 81 victories in 324 missions and was awarded the Knight's Cross. |
Tribute to Lt André De Meulemeester by Ivan Berryman. (P) Seen here in his Nieuport 23 aircraft, Lt André De Meulemeester was a Belgian Ace with 11 confirmed victories. Joining the Belgian Air Service in 1915, he was assigned to a squadron in 1916 and acquired the nickname Sergeant Mystère. He claimed his first of 19 unconfirmed victories in February 1917 and his first confirmed victory at the end of that April. After flying over 500 missions during the war, he joined the family brewery business and lived to the age of 78. |

Mädchen für Alles by Ivan Berryman. (P) Translated as Maid of all Work. Junkers Ju.88A-1 4D+DC of Stab II./KG 30 Eagle Wing is depicted attacking a requisitioned Royal Navy trawler in the English Channel in the summer of 1940. |
USS America by Ivan Berryman (P) A Vought A-7 Corsair of VA-146 makes its final approach to the sprawling deck of the USS America, (CVA-66) as she skirts Vietnamese waters in company with a little Rock-class missile / command cruiser. The A-7 became the Navys prime weapon toward the end of the war, playing a vital role in the anti-radiation Linebacker Raids. |
Musketeer Canberras by Ivan Berryman. (P) The Suez conflict of 1956 necessitated a large deployment of bombers from the RAF's new fleet of jets. 24 Vickers Valiants and 29 English Electric Canberras operated out of Luqa, together with a further 59 of the type flying from bases in Nicosia and Cyprus under the codename Operation Musketeer. Adorned in the theatre's black and yellow identification stripes, two XV Sqn Canberras are depicted here on a bombing mission to attack Egyptian airfields in October 1956. The squadron flew a total of 37 missions during the Suez crisis, its aircraft dropping more bombs than any other Canberra squadron. |
Tribute to Heinrich Gontermann by Ivan Berryman. (P) Originally in Germany's military, Heinrich Gontermann did not become an aviator until early 1916, and was not a fighter pilot until November of that year. Despite this, he is credited with 39 victories including 18 observation balloons. Scoring his first victory in November 1916, he did not score again until the next March - he is shown here in his Albatros D.III of Jasta 5 in April 1917 during which he claimed 12 victories - 5 balloons and 7 aircraft. Highly decorated with awards including the Knight's Cross and Blue Max, he was killed in a crash in the last days of October 1917 while performing aerobatics in his new Fokker Dr.I. |
Crop Culture - Tiger Moth by Ivan Berryman. (P) Tiger Moth sprays a potato field in southern England, early 1960s. Australian-born Jim, served during World War II on B.25 Mitchell bombers before pioneering crop dusting and topdressing in New Zealand with ex-military De Havilland Tiger Moths which he converted himself for the purpose. He went on to form a company called Crop Culture, which specialised in aerial spraying equipment, both in New Zealand and in the UK, before becoming a partner in the newly-formed Britten-Norman aircraft company which produced the Islander and Trislander utility transport aircraft in England. |
De Havilland Vampire T.11 by Ivan Berryman. (P) One of the final versions of the ubiquitous De Havilland Vampire to be built was the T.11, a two-seat trainer, one example of which was XE998, shown here in the colours of No.8 Flying School at RAF Swinderby in the early 1960s. This aircraft is now preserved and on display in the Solent Sky Museum, although currently in the livery of the Swiss Air Force. |
A Battle Lost by Ivan Berryman. (P) Although vulnerable and out-moded, the Fairey Battle nonetheless played a vital role in the early years of WWII, especially during the Battle of France. This aircraft, K9176 (MQ-G), a Fairey Battle Mk 1 of 226 Sqn was lost on the night of 21st / 22nd May, 1940, crashing near Montcornet. |
Tribute to Fighter Ace P/O Boleslaw Michal Gladych by Ivan Berryman (P) No.303 Squadron took off from Northolt at 1937 hrs to take part in Circus No. 20 by escorting six Blenheim bombers in an attack on Mardyke aerodrome The Spitfires were intercepted by the Luftwaffe, and in the course of the dogfight P/O Gladych shot down a Bf109 and then while doing a steep turn to avoid an attacker he collided with the tail section of another Bf109. He suffered a serious injury to his head when struck by a fragment of the German plane and was only semi-conscious when he attempted to make an emergency landing at RAF Manston. He was unable to make it to the airfield and crash-landed near Ramsgate, hitting a telephone pole in the process. |
Tribute to Tom Dalton-Morgan by Ivan Berryman. (P) Tom Dalton-Morgan was a British flying Ace who was credited with at least 17 victories during World War Two. It was in the aircraft shown here, Hurricane Mk.I P3972 of No.43 Sqn that on 13th August 1940 he claimed a Ju88 but was struck by return fire, baling out of the stricken Hurricane. He became an Ace during the Battle of Britain and later also became a Hurricane night-fighter Ace, claiming six victories. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Service Order and Order of the British Empire, he went on to manage the Woomera rocket testing facility in Australia for 30 years. He died in 2004, aged 87. |
Victory near Podgorica by Ivan Berryman. (P) As the invading forces took hold in Italy, many Italian pilots transferred their allegiance to the Aeronautica Co-Beligerante, among them Maggiore Teresio Martinoli who was to become Italy's highest scoring ace with 22 victories, before being tragically killed in a training accident. He is depicted here claiming a Ju.52 in the skies of Yugoslavia whilst flying the exceptional Macchi MC.205 Veltro. |
Tribute to Lt. James Meissner by Ivan Berryman. (P) Joining the 94th Pursuit Squadron in France in March 1918, James Meissner scored a total of 8 victories between May and October of that year. Shown here in his Nieuport 28, he scored 4 of his victories flying this aircraft before taking over command of 147th Pursuit Squadron flying a Spad S.XIII in July and scoring his final 4 victories. He died of pneumonia in 1936 but had top American flying Ace Eddie Rickenbacker as a pallbearer, a former colleague from the 94th Pursuit Squadron. |
Tribute to Major Erich Rudorffer by Ivan Berryman. (P) The Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG 54 Erich Rudorffer is depicted in Fw190A-6 'Black Double Chevron' over the misty forests of Finland in June 1944. Credited with 222 aerial victories, he survived being shot down no less than sixteen times and survived the war until eventually passing away in 2016 aged 98. |
Tribute to Lt Cdr Eric 'Winkle' Brown by Ivan Berryman. (P) One of the most experienced and respected test pilots in history, Eric 'Winkle' Brown carried out the first landing and take off by a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier on 3rd December 1945. This was accomplished in the second prototype De Havilland Vampire LZ551/G which had been extensively modified for the sole purpose of carrier operations. Not only was an arrester hook added, but the aircraft featured larger flaps and was fitted with the more powerful Goblin 2 engine. The first take off by a jet from an aircraft carrier is depicted here as Lt Cdr Brown lifts away from the deck of HMS Ocean on that momentous day. |
